This really reminds me of a recent radio lab show I listened to:

    http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/episodes/200...

Towards they end they talk about 1970s research done by Harold Sackeim and Ruben Gur about how some people lie to themselves more often than others and as it turns out in some studies, such as pointed out in this article about swimmers http://www.wnyc.org/files/radiolab/Self_Decepti...,
lying to yourself actually makes you better at ... well many things.

Zen and the Modern world !, Context and Content or Is it insight and Awareness . The use of methaphor and allergory to express or explain a personal evolution of self?.
the external is internal and the internal is external ,the amswer is incidental .
So as The Mr G and the Big D/Ls have found the importance is in Being,so what ever that means for you ,Namaste .

I used affirmations before and in my experience, they don't work.

You have to choose your affirmations carefully ; if for example you are trying to change the way you feel about a situation like public speaking and every time you do an affirmation ,you continue focusing on your anxiety about public speaking , I wont work for you . Instead you must imagine yourself giving that great speech .
